What is a tableau-building board game?

Tableau-building board games require players to build a tableau, like a city, and players with (often) the highest scoring tableau win!

Introduction

Tableau-building board games are a genre of board games that uses tableau-building, whether in a shared or private space as a mechanic. A tableau can range from tiles to cards, with players building and performing actions in a shared space such as in Carcassonne, or by building their own private tableaus that gives them bonuses, points, actions or resources in games like Everdell.

Tableau-building boards games often leverage other mechanics alongside, to create more interesting and layered board games, like Wingspan, where players build their tableaus using the birds, thereby building an engine that gives them further benefits in victory points, actions, resources and more.

Examples of tableau-building board games

We’ve played a few tableau-building board games, which includes some favourites amongst us and our friends, such as Everdell, Wingspan and 7 Wonders. Our other favourites in the tableau-building board game genre includes games like Kodama, Lizard Wizard and Carcassonne.

How long can a game take to play?

Based on the level of complexity, these games can take anywhere between minutes to hours. Simpler quick paced games may take 20-30 minutes, while midweight complexity games may take 2-3 hours based on your familiarity with the game. Needless to say, some highly complex games may take a whole day to resolve.

It is unsurprising, considering most tableau games are usually layered with other mechanics like engine-building and resource management (think Span series - Wingspan, Wyrmspan etc), worker placement (Everdell), and more.

Why we love this mechanic

Joshua loves the inevitable competition that comes with tableau-building games, from acquiring resources to taking actions to gain specific cards and generally preventing the competition (usually me, Anjali) from gaining the upper hand. Carcassonne is one of his favourites, with the shared tableau giving him a greater chance of messing with the other players.

Building up your tableau itself is quite satisfying, with various games requiring you to understand how best to min-max by finding the cards that have a good affinity with one another, allowing you to gain more points or actions in the moment. You can already guess that this is why Anjali enjoys these games. Nothing quite like finding the right way to min-max.

Who might enjoy tableau-building board games?

If you’re someone that enjoys healthy competition, quick thinking and tactics as the board changes and min-maxing for the best results per round, you’re sure to love tableau-building board games.

At their simplest, tableau-building board games like Kodama make for easy family game nights, perfect for more relaxed gamers that enjoy the slow pace of the game and small puzzle elements that come with it.

Slightly more complex board games like the Span series, Everdell and Carcassonne, make for great board game evenings with those who like competition and heavier strategic thinking when playing to make the rounds interesting.

There’s certainly something for everyone in this genre, you just have to look around a bit. We have some suggestions ourselves!
